Health and Safety Policy for Self Storage South Kensington
Self Storage South Kensington is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all customers, staff, contractors, removal teams and visitors. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks across our storage facility and associated removal and handling activities. We aim to prevent accidents, protect property and promote safe working practices at all times.
Our Health and Safety Responsibilities
We recognise our duty to manage health and safety risks in a systematic and proportionate way. Management is responsible for implementing this policy, allocating appropriate resources and reviewing health and safety performance regularly. All staff are required to follow safe systems of work, report hazards and contribute to a culture of safety and respect.
We expect contractors, including removal companies and delivery partners operating on site, to comply with this policy, follow all safety instructions and work in a manner that does not endanger themselves or others.
Customer and Visitor Responsibilities
Customers and visitors must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. This includes complying with all signage, rules and instructions given by our team members. We require all users of the facility to behave responsibly, avoid unsafe practices and immediately report any hazards, damage or unsafe conditions they notice.
When organising removals or transporting goods, customers are responsible for ensuring that their chosen removal company or helpers work safely, use appropriate equipment and follow our site rules.
Access, Site Safety and Security
Our facility is designed to provide safe access routes for vehicles, removal vans, trolleys and pedestrians. Signage is displayed to indicate speed limits, loading areas, no parking zones and emergency exits. Customers and contractors must respect all directional signs and keep fire exits and corridors clear at all times.
Loading bays and access points must be used correctly and kept tidy. Obstructions, spillages or damage to doors, ramps or lifts must be reported immediately so that we can take prompt action. Children and pets must be supervised at all times and are not permitted to play in loading areas or traffic routes.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Many of our customers and removal partners handle bulky or heavy items. Poor lifting technique and unsafe practices can cause injury. We encourage all users to plan lifting tasks carefully, assess the weight and stability of items and seek assistance when required. Mechanical aids, such as trolleys and sack trucks, should be used where possible and only for their intended purpose.
Equipment provided by Self Storage South Kensington must be returned safely after use and not misused or altered. Any defects or faults must be reported to staff immediately and the equipment taken out of use until inspected. Customers using their own lifting equipment or removal vehicles are responsible for making sure that such equipment is suitable, maintained and operated safely.
Storage Unit Safety
We require all customers to store their goods in a way that does not create a risk to themselves, other users or our staff. Items must be stacked securely and not exceed the recommended height. Heavy items should be stored at low levels to reduce the risk of falls and crush injuries. Access routes within the unit must be kept clear for safe entry and exit.
Prohibited and hazardous items must not be stored under any circumstances. These include flammable or explosive materials, illegal goods, gas cylinders, toxic substances and any other items that could present a fire, chemical or safety risk. If customers are unsure whether an item is suitable for storage, they should consult a member of our team before bringing it on site.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Self Storage South Kensington maintains fire detection, alarm systems and emergency lighting appropriate to the facility. Fire exits, escape routes and assembly points are clearly marked. These must never be blocked, locked or obstructed by vehicles, trolleys or stored goods.
In the event of an alarm, all persons on site must leave the building immediately and proceed to the designated assembly point. Lifts must not be used during a fire evacuation. Customers should follow the instructions of staff or emergency services and must not re-enter the building until it has been declared safe.
Working With Removal Companies and Contractors
We frequently work alongside removal companies and other contractors who assist customers with moving items into or out of storage. All such parties are expected to comply with our health and safety standards, cooperate with our staff and operate in a professional and safe manner.
Removal teams must manage their vehicle movements safely, use appropriate loading and unloading techniques and ensure the correct securing of loads. Where work at height is involved, suitable equipment and controls must be used. Contractors are responsible for training and supervising their staff and for ensuring that their activities do not put others at risk.
Incident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, injuries, near misses, fires and security incidents that occur on our premises must be reported to our staff as soon as possible, no matter how minor they may appear. This allows us to respond quickly, provide assistance if needed and take steps to prevent recurrence.
We will investigate incidents to identify causes and implement appropriate corrective actions. Information about incidents will be recorded and reviewed to improve our systems, procedures and training.
Training, Communication and Review
Staff receive training relevant to their roles, including safe use of equipment, emergency procedures, customer assistance and the handling of health and safety concerns. We communicate key safety information to customers and contractors through signage, written guidance and verbal briefings where required.
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry practice and our own operations. Our objective is continuous improvement in safety performance and the reduction of risks associated with storage, access and removal activities within our facility.
By using Self Storage South Kensington, all customers, visitors and contractors agree to cooperate with this policy and to contribute to a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
